My Galleries

I have a real passion for photography, and love the feeling of capturing a perfect moment, whether that be for a wedding or a nice show of an animal doing what they do best.

If you’d like to buy some art for the walls based on any of my pictures, feel free to browse my shop, otherwise please have fun exploring these galleries.  I generally have no issue at all with people using my photos for their own personal purpose, but if you plan to make use of one of my images for commercial reasons (or anything belonging to a guest, where I do not own the copyright), please get in touch to check that the purpose is okay.

Finally, if you’d like me to come and take pictures of your event, please get in touch.

Ascalon's Edits

As some of you may already know, Ascalon now has my old Canon 1000D and has been going on his own journey to become a really good photographer.  I chat to him fairly regularly and try to offer pointers where possible, but more often than not I find that his composition is great, but his images need a little tweaking to make them look amazing.  As such, this gallery isn’t solely my work, but a combined effort where Ascalon takes the photo and I play with the post-processing to make it look as good as it can.  He also features on my Guest Galleries page.

If you think there’s something missing from my portfolio, let me know and I’ll see whether I can take your suggestion.

Questions About Your Photography

What do you shoot with?

My main camera is a Canon EOS 5d MkII.  With that I use a variety of lenses, most notably a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L for short-range flexibility, a Tamron 70-300mm Canon Fit and a Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens.  I also have a 2x Extender and a fluid head tripod.

In short, the best camera is the one you are most likely to have with you when a photo opportunity presents itself.  For many people, this will be the camera built in to their phones, but if you want to up your technology a bit and have more control over the various aspects of your photography, you  could definitely do worse than the Canon 1000D, which was my first dSLR  and served me well for many years.  It has the  advantage of being smaller and lighter than the full-frame camera I now use, and is also extremely cheap for what you get.

Digital SLR photos are notorious for coming out of the camera looking worse than what you would have taken with a point and shoot camera or even with your phone.  As such, editing software is a must if you want to look at this type of camera.  The good news is that there are some amazing products available for free, namely GIMP and Darktable.  I  prefer GIMP for editing single images, but Darktable really excels at bulk editing loads of RAW files at the same time, so I keep both installed.

Honestly, I don’t know.  I use Canon products because I have always done so and have no reason to change.  Others swear by other manufacturers and would likewise never change.  The only real decision to make is whether you can afford a good camera and all the necessary paraphernalia, because once you buy a camera you are locked in to that particular type of product.  For example, if you buy a Canon camera, your lenses will all need to either be Canon fits or adapted to fit a Canon body.  In practice this means that if you have a specific goal for your photography that  requires a certain lens that only really works with one camera body, your decision is largely made for you.  Outside that very rare case, most modern providers offer great camera bodies and a large range of lenses from the budget to the insanely-priced high-end luxury lenses.

Like What You See?

If you like what you see in my galleries but don’t want to buy a physical print, why not buy me a treat instead?  Those who know me will attest that I will do (almost) anything for good chocolate, so what better reward if you like the look of my photos?

Disclaimer: I do not promise to use all donations for chocolate, and might instead put them towards my wishlist for photographic equipment.  Or something else.  Frankly, I have no idea yet.  But you can definitely feel like you’ve helped feed at least one of my addictions!
